28 Principles in The Urantia Book

The Great Question Number Seven

7. Is loyalty— devotion to highest duty—desirable? Then must man carry on amid the possibilities of betrayal and desertion. The valor of devotion to duty consists in the implied danger of default.

The Great Goal of Hue-manimal Existence

It is to the mind of perfect poise, housed in a body of clean habits, stabilized neural energies, and balanced chemical function—when the physical, mental, and spiritual powers are in triune harmony of development—that a maximum of light and truth can be imparted with a minimum of temporal danger or risk to the real welfare of such a being. By such a balanced growth does man ascend the circles of planetary progression one by one, from the seventh to the first.

On the Path to Understanding the "Mastery of Self"

It is accurate to say that "understanding" the 28 principles of "high mortal philosophy" found in Paper 48, The Morontia Life required the asking of many questions and not a small amount of meditative thinking on them.

The hue-man neural network to mind-connection is like a "trillion lanes highway." There is nothing busier on the face of this planet than this "trillion lanes highway."

Thought after thought races at unimaginable speed along vast interconnecting routes.

Thinking an average of fifty-thousand (50,000) thoughts per day does not constitute being a "real thinker."

110:7.6.  So few mortals are real thinkers; you do not spiritually develop and discipline your minds to the point of favorable liaison with the divine Adjusters.

  • To what extent do you go through your day thinking, but rarely if ever observing your thoughts?
  • Have you ever tried sitting quietly, just observing your thought-patterns?
  • Then, when your thoughts have cleared, in that moment ask the question "what is my next thought?"
  • Do you think you will ever stop thinking long enough to become a "real thinker?"
  • What does it mean, anyway, to be a "real thinker?"

"Allowing" yourself to ask questions is a form of "thought-pattern-interruption."

Just the act of "allowing" yourself to ask questions is to stand before the portal to the indwelling Thought Adjuster's presence and open the mind up to receiving greater light of truth.

Ever Experienced Desertion by Those You Called "Friends?"

Personally, I have experienced disloyalty and desertion by nearly everyone I have ever called "friend."
  • Perhaps, you have also experienced desertion by those you trusted and called friends?
  • Were you ever disloyal to friendship?
  • Did you ever readily abandon friendship with another when that other didn't play by your rules of...
    • thought-pattern-reactions (thinking and emotionally reacting just like you?)
    • dressing in the similar or same fashion as you?
    • liking the same foods as you?
    • watching the same Tell-LIES-Vision "programming" as you?
    • liking to listen to the same music as you?
    • wasn't the "mirror image" of you?

Many, if not most of us, early in life experience disloyalty and desertion of friendship.
  • But what was the important lesson(s) to be learned from all those experiences?
  • Did disloyalty and desertion "break you" and cause you sorrow, anxiety and depression?
  • Or did you "stand strong" in what you know to be the truth of your "relationship to the divine spirit within," regardless of the choices made by fellow children of God?
All of the above are just a few of the many questions which come into mind when thinking about the great question number seven and the 25th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book.

Principle number twenty-five (25) states:

48:7.27 25. Greatness lies not so much in possessing strength as in making a wise and divine use of such strength.

Turning this Principle into a Personal "I am" Declaration

I possess spiritual courage and I make a wise and divine use of this inner strength.

Always remember: it is not possible to grow into the "living spiritual value" contained within an intellectual principle typed onto a page; you must "internalize" the principle by converting it into a personal "I am" declaration of the person you desire to become.

Also, I am here reminded of principle number six, which states:

48:7.8 6. To enjoy privilege without abuse, to have liberty without license, to possess power and steadfastly refuse to use it for self-aggrandizement—these are the marks of high civilization.

When the child of God is early taught the great wisdom in using one's personal powers of free will creativity only in truth and for beauty and goodness in the service of others, this sets the child's life path toward the spiritualization that manifests in "true character."

Inversely, when the child of God is early taught the dictum, "do as I say and not as I do," the life path is set toward "abuse of privilege, licensing liberty, possessing the intellectual and physical powers of specialized skills and cleverness" for "self-inflation, ego, wealth, power and control aggrandizement."

The individual life path of progression is not set in stone either direction.

But the path of selfishness instead of selflessness is far harder to self-correct.

And either path provides ample opportunity for self-correction, self-discipline--self-control, self-direction to the indwelling Thought Adjuster, and self-mastery.

Let Your Greatness Lie Not in Possessing Strength

  • Can you possess strength and still make a wise and divine use of such strength?
Note that the 25th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book does not say you can't possess strength, only that greatness does not lie in "possessing strength." Rather, "greatness" lies in making a divine and wise use of such strength.
  • What does it really mean to "make a wise and divine use of such strength?
In my perception it comes down to, once again, that "a display of specialized skills and cleverness do not signify "spiritual capacity." And without being a moral person, there is no "true character."

The personality (pattern-reality), the morontial soul and the divine Thought Adjuster must express "true character" through the mind and the physical-energy-system.

"Character deficiencies" are "distortions" in the body-mind connection. "The "true character" of the morontial soul and the "pattern-reality" of personality will ever manifest as "less than real" and "false" aspects of character when they are expressing through the "character deficiency" "distortions" of the body-mind connection.

Thus, what it really means to make a "divine and wise use of such strength" refers to "allowing" the mortal self to transfer the "seat of identity" into the morontial soul, wherein the "love" of becoming a "true character" son of God far outweighs the material level "character deficiencies."

And this great love of becoming the morontial soul through sincerely honest and devoted dedication to working with the indwelling Thought Adjuster inevitably leads to becoming the "child of God of true character."

The 25th principle is about self-correction. And it takes experiential spiritual courage to self-correct, self-discipline and exercise self-control, and ever-momentarily self-direct back to alignment with Father's will, by giving our most honestly sincere cooperation to the spirit-leading of the indwelling divine spirit--the Thought Adjuster -- all of which leads to self-mastery.

The 25th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book correlates to the individual child of God vibrationally responding to the marshalling impulse of the seventh (7th) Adjutant Mind spirit of Wisdom (cosmic insight). The 25th principle is the first (1st) of the set of principles 25 through 28, which are the generalized requirements to experientially master the first (1st) psychic circle of experiential spiritual cosmic insight into the reality of the Paradise Father, also corresponding to the sixth (7th) planetary age and the seventh (7th) Mansion Training World system of educational and socialization equivalency requirements.

Note: Any of the first twenty-four (24) principles representing the generalized requirements for the mastery of the seventh, six, fifth, fourth, third and second psychic circles of experiential spiritual intuition, experiential spiritual understanding, experiential spiritual courage, experiential spiritual knowledge, experiential spiritual fraternalhood, and experiential spiritual worship (cosmic insight) which were not mastered (after entrance in the second (1st) psychic circle) will be carried over into the first for further experiential acquirement.

The Great Goal of Hue-man Attainment

  • I am the mind of perfect poise.
  • I am housed in a body of clean habits, and clear and pure thinking.
  • I am stabilized in neural energies.
  • I am balanced in chemical function.
  • I am ever-momentarily transferring all mortal experiential meanings and values into the unifying whole.
  • I am ever-momentarily unifying the physical, mental, and spiritual powers with the "I am that I am" personality.
  • I am ever-momentarily giving you, my indwelling divine partner and Thought Controller, my most honest, sincere, and dedicated cooperation in attaining to "supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter."

  • What are the four cosmic dimensions of personality unification?
1. Body                            1. self-correction
2. Mind                           2. self-discipline / self-control
3. Soul                             3. self-direction to spirit-leading,
4. Spirit                           4. self-mastery

Personality unity self-realizes supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

What is your definition of religion?
How do you define 'your religion?'
How do you keep your religion...pure...?

Personal religion must be kept uncontaminated by:

1. maintaining a self-corrective philosophy of daily living.
2. maintaining non-involvement and impartiality with regard to all social, economic, and political alliances.
3. seeking out and maintaining creative, comforting, and love-expanding relations with one's fellow beings.
4. enhancing personal progress of spiritual insight and the appreciation of cosmic values.
5. prevention of fanaticism by the compensations of the scientific mental attitude.

What is a character deficiency?
What is self-correction of a character-deficiency?
What are the steps involved in correcting one's own character-deficiencies?
What replaces a character-deficiency?

Does a character-deficiency automatically disappear when one is exercising self-correction, self-control and self-direction?

1. Self-correction.

99:3.7 The great weakness of all this unrecognized and unconscious type of religious activity is that it is unable to profit from open religious criticism and thereby attain to profitable levels of self-correction. It is a fact that religion does not grow unless it is disciplined by constructive criticism, amplified by philosophy, purified by science, and nourished by loyal fellowship.

2. Self-control.

54:1.6 True liberty is the associate of genuine self-respect; false liberty is the consort of self-admiration. True liberty is the fruit of self-control; false liberty, the assumption of self-assertion. Self-control leads to altruistic service; self-admiration tends towards the exploitation of others for the selfish aggrandizement of such a mistaken individual as is willing to sacrifice righteous attainment for the sake of possessing unjust power over his fellow beings.

3. Self-direction.

36:5.8.  3. The spirit of courage—the fidelity endowment—in personal beings, the basis of character acquirement and the intellectual root of moral stamina and spiritual bravery. When enlightened by facts and inspired by truth, this becomes the secret of the urge of evolutionary ascension by the channels of intelligent and conscientious self-direction.

4. Supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

109:3.2 ...comparatively few will elect to ascend the moral heights beyond the hills of self-mastery and character acquirement to attain the higher levels of emerging spirituality.
