28 Principles in The Urantia Book

The Great Question Number Six

6. Is idealism—the approaching concept of the divine—desirable? Then must man struggle in an environment of relative goodness and beauty, surroundings stimulative of the irrepressible reach for better things.

The Great Goal of Hue-manimal Existence

It is to the mind of perfect poise, housed in a body of clean habits, stabilized neural energies, and balanced chemical function—when the physical, mental, and spiritual powers are in triune harmony of development—that a maximum of light and truth can be imparted with a minimum of temporal danger or risk to the real welfare of such a being. By such a balanced growth does man ascend the circles of planetary progression one by one, from the seventh to the first.

On the Path to Understanding the "Mastery of Self"

It is accurate to say that "understanding" the 28 principles of "high mortal philosophy" found in Paper 48, The Morontia Life required the asking of many questions and not a small amount of meditative thinking on them

In the following passage from Paper 156, The Sojourn at Tyre and Sidon, we find one of many profound series of thoughts from Jesus of Nazareth:

156:5.5 “But let me warn you against the folly of undertaking to surmount temptation by the effort of supplanting one desire by another and supposedly superior desire through the mere force of the human will. If you would be truly triumphant over the temptations of the lesser and lower nature, you must come to that place of spiritual advantage where you have really and truly developed an actual interest in, and love for, those higher and more idealistic forms of conduct which your mind is desirous of substituting for these lower and less idealistic habits of behavior that you recognize as temptation. You will in this way be delivered through spiritual transformation rather than be increasingly overburdened with the deceptive suppression of mortal desires. The old and the inferior will be forgotten in the love for the new and the superior. Beauty is always triumphant over ugliness in the hearts of all who are illuminated by the love of truth. There is mighty power in the expulsive energy of a new and sincere spiritual affection. And again I say to you, be not overcome by evil but rather overcome evil with good.”

The Love For Higher and More Idealistic Forms of Conduct

The true path of self-discipline and self-control is based, not in "merely affirming" a "superior habit-reaction pattern" in the attempt to replace an "inferior habit-reaction pattern."
A lifetime of negative programming makes this practically impossible to achieve.

It is, however, factual to state that the mortal child of God will not "dare to declare" who he and she really desires to be (the person of true character) until there is a genuine love for "spiritual transformation."

Returning to one of the greatest transformations in my experience, it was impossible for me to stop smoking 4-6 packs of non filter cigarettes per day. I was too heavily addicted to the nicotine.

Instead, it was only when I truly desired to embrace the
superior idealistic inner vision of myself as a non smoker, "allowing" myself to grow into the "I am declaration" -- I am a non smoker; I am free from smoking cigarettes, and persisting (self-discipline and self-control) in daily envisioning the new me and both silently and verbally declaring who I truly am, that I was able to go from 4-6 packs of non filter cigarettes per day to 4 filtered cigarettes per day, and then make the final decision to quit altogether.

On the day of quitting, I supported my decision by going on a juice and water fast for seven days to get all of the nicotine out of my bodily energy-system. Even after the first seven days, it was a psychological torment, because the desire was still there (the habit-reaction pattern between the body and the mind).

It would take another year and a half before the desire was no longer there.

Without the deep love for becoming the superior idealistic version of myself (a healthier and more vibrant me), and putting into daily practice the "I am" declarations, supported by "self-hypnosis," (auto-suggestion--inner envisioning) this transformation would never have occurred.

I would also have transitioned off the planet long before now.

With the meanings and values contained in the above content, let us explore the 22nd of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book.

48:7.24 22. The evolving soul is not made divine by what it does, but by what it strives to do.

Mental Laziness vs. Self-discipline and Self-control

Mental laziness ever makes the individual child of God susceptible to...
  • the external influence and control of...
    • other individuals,
    • the group,
    • the herd of hue-man masses, and
    • anyone viewed as having authority over the individual self.
Mental laziness ever makes one susceptible to "temptations."

From the dictionary we get these two primary meanings for "strive, striving."

Definition of strive

1: to devote serious effort or energy : ENDEAVOR

strive to finish a project

2: to struggle in opposition : CONTEND

It is within this meaning of "to devote serious effort or energy" which makes clear the deeper meaning in "the evolving soul is not made divine by what it does." It is in the devoting of serious effort and energy to...
  • self-correction and self-control through a sustained love for becoming the superior version of yourself (daily inner envisioning of the more ideal you and silently and verbally declaring (through "I am" declarations) the real you--the true character you into which you are desirous to grow and become.
The "true character you" is your evolving mortal soul.

Prayer for other children of God--even ALL children of God, plus worship (having a "little talk" with Father and our divine Parents), and then listening for the leading of the indwelling Thought Adjuster requires effort--striving to be conscious of doing these three activities consistently.

We are ever confronted with our mental laziness.

And we ever have the free will choice to make a greater and more consistent effort to align the hue-man mortal will with the will of our Paradise Father, who is divinely resident within the hue-man mind.

It is in sincerely honest and devoted cooperation with the indwelling Thought Adjuster that the super mortal partnership is formed through which the "striving" in moral decision-making release the raw morontial energy with which the indwelling divine spirit is recreating us as we truly are -- the true character child of our Paradise Father.

And this is the blueprint route to becoming the fully mature morontial soul, even while residing in the mortal bio-suit.

Striving for Perfection?

  • What is the point of ever having the "great goal of hue-man attainment," if, as many others would have you beLIEve, striving for perfection (true character) is bad and tantamount to failure?
The recipe for failure is all around us...a writhing, headlong crashing sea of "character deficiencies." And this recipe is...separation from God the Father, who actually indwells our minds in the divine presence of the Thought Adjuster.

All of the conflicts which have ever taken place, are currently taking place, and will ever take place on Urantia are rooted in the false beLIEf systems -- the weeds ever growing up in the garden of the mind and which are ever choking the good plants to death.

"Never forget how far you've come. Everything you have gotten through. All the times you have pushed even when you felt you couldn't. All the mornings you got out of bed no matter how hard it was. All the times you wanted to give up but you got through another day. Never forget how much strength you have developed along the way."

I declare: I am ever-momentarily striving to become my morontial soul in fullness of true character expression to the outer world.

The 22nd principle is about self-discipline and self-control. And it takes experiential spiritual courage to self-correct, self-discipline and exercise self-control, and ever-momentarily self-direct back to alignment with Father's will, by giving our most honestly sincere cooperation to the spirit-leading of the indwelling divine spirit--the Thought Adjuster -- all of which leads to self-mastery.

The 22nd of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book correlates to the individual child of God vibrationally responding to the marshalling impulse of the sixth (6th) Adjutant Mind spirit of Worship (cosmic insight). The 22nd principle is the second (2nd) of the set of principles 21 through 24, which are the generalized requirements to experientially master the second (2nd) psychic circle of experiential spiritual cosmic insight into the reality of the Paradise Father, also corresponding to the sixth (6th) planetary age and the sixth (6th) Mansion Training World system of educational and socialization equivalency requirements.

Note: Any of the first sixteen (20) principles representing the generalized requirements for the mastery of the seventh, six, fifth, fourth and third psychic circles of experiential spiritual intuition, experiential spiritual understanding, experiential spiritual courage, experiential spiritual knowledge, and experiential spiritual fraternalhood, which were not mastered (after entrance in the second (2nd) psychic circle) will be carried over into the second for further experiential acquirement.

The Great Goal of Hue-man Attainment

  • I am the mind of perfect poise.
  • I am housed in a body of clean habits, and clear and pure thinking.
  • I am stabilized in neural energies.
  • I am balanced in chemical function.
  • I am ever-momentarily transferring all mortal experiential meanings and values into the unifying whole.
  • I am ever-momentarily unifying the physical, mental, and spiritual powers with the "I am that I am" personality.
  • I am ever-momentarily giving you, my indwelling divine partner and Thought Controller, my most honest, sincere, and dedicated cooperation in attaining to "supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter."

  • What are the four cosmic dimensions of personality unification?
1. Body                            1. self-correction
2. Mind                           2. self-discipline / self-control
3. Soul                             3. self-direction to spirit-leading,
4. Spirit                           4. self-mastery

Personality unity self-realizes supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

What is your definition of religion?
How do you define 'your religion?'
How do you keep your religion...pure...?

Personal religion must be kept uncontaminated by:

1. maintaining a self-corrective philosophy of daily living.
2. maintaining non-involvement and impartiality with regard to all social, economic, and political alliances.
3. seeking out and maintaining creative, comforting, and love-expanding relations with one's fellow beings.
4. enhancing personal progress of spiritual insight and the appreciation of cosmic values.
5. prevention of fanaticism by the compensations of the scientific mental attitude.

What is a character deficiency?
What is self-correction of a character-deficiency?
What are the steps involved in correcting one's own character-deficiencies?
What replaces a character-deficiency?

Does a character-deficiency automatically disappear when one is exercising self-correction, self-control and self-direction?

1. Self-correction.

99:3.7 The great weakness of all this unrecognized and unconscious type of religious activity is that it is unable to profit from open religious criticism and thereby attain to profitable levels of self-correction. It is a fact that religion does not grow unless it is disciplined by constructive criticism, amplified by philosophy, purified by science, and nourished by loyal fellowship.

2. Self-control.

54:1.6 True liberty is the associate of genuine self-respect; false liberty is the consort of self-admiration. True liberty is the fruit of self-control; false liberty, the assumption of self-assertion. Self-control leads to altruistic service; self-admiration tends towards the exploitation of others for the selfish aggrandizement of such a mistaken individual as is willing to sacrifice righteous attainment for the sake of possessing unjust power over his fellow beings.

3. Self-direction.

36:5.8.  3. The spirit of courage—the fidelity endowment—in personal beings, the basis of character acquirement and the intellectual root of moral stamina and spiritual bravery. When enlightened by facts and inspired by truth, this becomes the secret of the urge of evolutionary ascension by the channels of intelligent and conscientious self-direction.

4. Supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

109:3.2 ...comparatively few will elect to ascend the moral heights beyond the hills of self-mastery and character acquirement to attain the higher levels of emerging spirituality.
