The 14th of the

28 Principles in The Urantia Book

The Great Question Number Four

4. Is faith—the supreme assertion of human thought—desirable? Then must the mind of man find itself in that troublesome predicament where it ever knows less than it can believe.

The Great Goal of Hue-manimal Existence

It is to the mind of perfect poise, housed in a body of clean habits, stabilized neural energies, and balanced chemical function—when the physical, mental, and spiritual powers are in triune harmony of development—that a maximum of light and truth can be imparted with a minimum of temporal danger or risk to the real welfare of such a being. By such a balanced growth does man ascend the circles of planetary progression one by one, from the seventh to the first.

On the Path to Understanding the "Mastery of Self"

It is accurate to say that "understanding" the 28 principles of "high mortal philosophy" found in Paper 48, The Morontia Life required the asking of many questions and not a small amount of meditative thinking on them.

Speaking Consciously--But Not Conscious of Speaking

When I think of the 14th principle, three (3) words immediately come into mind:
  • assumption -- an assuming that something is true (often in arrogance and pretension)
  • presumption -- a beLIEf in a probability not grounded in reason or evidence, and
  • projection -- the attribution of one's own ideas, feelings, or attitudes to other people or to objects.
"We make all sorts of assumptions, because we don't have the courage to ask questions." Don Miguel

But it takes no courage at all, only cowardice to hide behind one's assumptions, presumptions, and projections of personal or group beLIEfs onto fellow children of God.

Assumption, presumption, and projection are the inverse (opposite) of the 14th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book, which states:

48:7.16 14. Whet the appetites of your associates for truth; give advice only when it is asked for.

Turning this Principle into a Personal "I am" Declaration

I stimulate the desire of my fellow children of God for truth; I give advice only when it is asked for.
Always remember: it is not possible to grow into the "living spiritual value" contained within an intellectual principle typed onto a page; you must "internalize" the principle by converting it into a personal "I am" declaration of the person you desire to become.

Were you "programmed from birth" to beLIEve only your perspective of
  • what is "right and wrong,"
  • what is "truth and error,"
  • what is "right action and sin,"
  • what is "allowable speech and what is not,"
is "absolute?

Herein I am reminded of the passage in The Urantia Book, which states:

48:6.33 Law is life itself and not the rules of its conduct. Evil is a transgression of law, not a violation of the rules of conduct pertaining to life, which is the law. Falsehood is not a matter of narration technique but something premeditated as a perversion of truth. The creation of new pictures out of old facts, the restatement of parental life in the lives of offspring—these are the artistic triumphs of truth. The shadow of a hair's turning, premeditated for an untrue purpose, the slightest twisting or perversion of that which is principle—these constitute falseness. But the fetish of factualized truth, fossilized truth, the iron band of so-called unchanging truth, holds one blindly in a closed circle of cold fact. One can be technically right as to fact and everlastingly wrong in the truth.

"Whet" in the sense it is used in the 14th principle of high mortal philosophy means to "stimulate."

  • How do you stimulate the appetite of fellow children of God for greater "light of truth?"
  • What is the difference between a "dictator" and a "stimulator?"

A dictator is ever telling others...

  • what to beLIEve,
  • what they must eat and drink,
  • what is healthy and not healthy,
  • how they must dress and act in order to achieve materialistic success,
  • how they must speak and what they must say in order to be accepted by the group,
  • what is true and what is false,
  • who is favored by God and who is not,
  • who is saved and who is not,
  • who is going to heaven and who is going to hell,
and on and on and on, ad infinitum.

The present worldwide conflicts we presently see going on is because of assumption, presumption and projecting our "programmed" be
LIEfs onto others around us.

Tel-e-vision is, in reality, Tell-LIES-Vision, mainstream mass media propaganda honed by the false science of "programming the mind" to beLIEve whatever those evil-minded children of God dictate "must be beLIEved," by endlessly repeating the lies of their "self-aggrandizing" and "power-seeking" agenda.

But such clear intent to foist "intellectual fraud" upon the souls of the children of God is not limited to the evil-minded.

Assumption, presumption and projection are universal "negative habits" of thought-feeling-reaction to anything another says and/or does.

There are the universally observed habits of mind to assume

that what we see, hear another say and do (also presumed to have greater authority) is narrating facts and acting with honest intent.

When the story, which may be second hand, is presumed to be true, it is then told and re-told, endlessly spreading from individual to individual and group to group.

Such biased storytelling (assumed/presumed to be the truth) becomes "gospel" and "absolute."

Because all such storytelling is "mere beLIEf," (not grounded in firsthand experience and honest research and fact-finding), and becomes "gospel" and "absolute," it becomes the "imprisoning scaffolding" which limits, even severely limits the capacity for spirituality.

In my view, all of this perspective reveals to me, personally, why there is such great and immediate overreaction in the thoughts-feelings, when confronted with new information (a new perspective) which does not fit the fixed and unbending paradigm (world view).

In conversations with individuals and within groups, it is therefore so easy to overreact whenever someone is stating his and her "gospel truth." It is the "gospel truth" in his and her own paradigm.

Is it evolving ever so slowly but surely into "living faith?" ? Or will it remain "fixed and self-imprisoning?"

Patience would allow all involved to freely express his and her views and interpretations of life experience and what is perceived--assumed, presumed and projected outward about what is happening in the world around us.

Impatience dictates an immediate overreaction which must be

corrected at any cost to friendly relations. And usually, he and she who readily "dictates" to others assumes control over the conversation and continues in an essay until brutally interrupted by another or others.

And then, when an individual in the group, who is quietly thinking to the self (in observation of what transpiring) interjects a thought-ideal-principle, which dares to transcend the existing self-imprisoning beLIEf scaffolding, and a pandemonium of terse feelings arise.

Learning to "whet the appetites of one's associates for truth" and "giving advice only when it is asked for" is indeed an artform that is rarely learned and mastered during the short lifespan of the "flash in the pan" mortal experience.

Is the self-discipline and self-control required to attain mastery over what comes out of the mind and the voice box over the tongue worth striving for?

Indeed, it is worth every second of such a grand investment in the self and in others, in order to attain to that high spiritual estate of unselfish service to fellow children of God.

The 14th principle is about self-discipline and self-control. And it takes experiential spiritual courage to self-correct, self-discipline and exercise self-control, and ever-momentarily self-direct back to alignment with Father's will, by giving our most honestly sincere cooperation to the spirit-leading of the indwelling divine spirit--the Thought Adjuster.

The 14th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book correlates to the individual child of God vibrationally responding to the marshalling impulse of the fourth (4th) Adjutant Mind spirit of Knowledge. The 14th principle is the second (2nd) of the set of principles 13 through 16, which are the generalized requirements to experientially master the fourth (4th) psychic circle of experiential spiritual knowledge, also corresponding to the 4th planetary age and the 4th Mansion Training World educational and socialization equivalency requirements.

Note: Any of the first twelve principles representing the generalized requirements for the mastery of the seventh, six and fifth psychic circles of experiential spiritual intuition, experiential spiritual understanding, and experiential spiritual courage, which were not mastered (after entrance in the 4th psychic circle) will be carried over into the fourth (4th) for further experiential acquirement.

The Great Goal of Hue-man Attainment

  • I am the mind of perfect poise.
  • I am housed in a body of clean habits, and clear and pure thinking.
  • I am stabilized in neural energies.
  • I am balanced in chemical function.
  • I am ever-momentarily transferring all mortal experiential meanings and values into the unifying whole.
  • I am ever-momentarily unifying the physical, mental, and spiritual powers with the "I am that I am" personality.
  • I am ever-momentarily giving you, my indwelling divine partner and Thought Controller, my most honest, sincere, and dedicated cooperation in attaining to "supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter."

  • What are the four cosmic dimensions of personality unification?
1. Body                            1. self-correction
2. Mind                           2. self-discipline / self-control
3. Soul                             3. self-direction to spirit-leading,
4. Spirit                           4. self-mastery

Personality unity self-realizes supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

What is your definition of religion?
How do you define 'your religion?'
How do you keep your religion...pure...?

Personal religion must be kept uncontaminated by:

1. maintaining a self-corrective philosophy of daily living.
2. maintaining non-involvement and impartiality with regard to all social, economic, and political alliances.
3. seeking out and maintaining creative, comforting, and love-expanding relations with one's fellow beings.
4. enhancing personal progress of spiritual insight and the appreciation of cosmic values.
5. prevention of fanaticism by the compensations of the scientific mental attitude.

What is a character deficiency?
What is self-correction of a character-deficiency?
What are the steps involved in correcting one's own character-deficiencies?
What replaces a character-deficiency?

Does a character-deficiency automatically disappear when one is exercising self-correction, self-control and self-direction?

1. Self-correction.

99:3.7 The great weakness of all this unrecognized and unconscious type of religious activity is that it is unable to profit from open religious criticism and thereby attain to profitable levels of self-correction. It is a fact that religion does not grow unless it is disciplined by constructive criticism, amplified by philosophy, purified by science, and nourished by loyal fellowship.

2. Self-control.

54:1.6 True liberty is the associate of genuine self-respect; false liberty is the consort of self-admiration. True liberty is the fruit of self-control; false liberty, the assumption of self-assertion. Self-control leads to altruistic service; self-admiration tends towards the exploitation of others for the selfish aggrandizement of such a mistaken individual as is willing to sacrifice righteous attainment for the sake of possessing unjust power over his fellow beings.

3. Self-direction.

36:5.8.  3. The spirit of courage—the fidelity endowment—in personal beings, the basis of character acquirement and the intellectual root of moral stamina and spiritual bravery. When enlightened by facts and inspired by truth, this becomes the secret of the urge of evolutionary ascension by the channels of intelligent and conscientious self-direction.

4. Supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

109:3.2 ...comparatively few will elect to ascend the moral heights beyond the hills of self-mastery and character acquirement to attain the higher levels of emerging spirituality.
