The Great Question Number Four

4. Is faith—the supreme assertion of human thought—desirable? Then must the mind of man find itself in that troublesome predicament where it ever knows less than it can believe.

The Great Goal of Hue-manimal Existence

It is to the mind of perfect poise, housed in a body of clean habits, stabilized neural energies, and balanced chemical function—when the physical, mental, and spiritual powers are in triune harmony of development—that a maximum of light and truth can be imparted with a minimum of temporal danger or risk to the real welfare of such a being. By such a balanced growth does man ascend the circles of planetary progression one by one, from the seventh to the first.

On the Path to Understanding the "Mastery of Self"

It is accurate to say that "understanding" the 28 principles of "high mortal philosophy" found in Paper 48, The Morontia Life required the asking of many questions and not a small amount of meditative thinking on them.

The Rich Soul vs. The Barren Soul

• What is the inverse (opposite) of a morontial soul that is rich by virtue of "allowing" oneself to be "spirit-led?"

In order to answer the above question, one needs to have a clear and unequivocal understanding of the word "affectation."

• What does "affectation" mean?

Definition of Affection

a: speech or conduct not natural to oneself : an unnatural form of behavior meant especially to impress others

His French accent is just an affectation.

 

b: the act of taking on or displaying an attitude or mode of behavior not natural to oneself or not genuinely felt

speaking honestly without affectation. 

In short:

• fake speech,
• fake conduct,
• fake behavior,
• disingenuous,
• dishonest.

The synonyms for "disingenuous" also describe "affectation."

So then, with these meanings in mind for the word "affectation" let us introduce and explore the deeper and deepest meaning of the 15th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book.

48:7.17 15. Affectation is the ridiculous effort of the ignorant to appear wise, the attempt of the barren soul to appear rich.

Turning this Principle into a Personal "I am" Declaration

In all relations with fellow children of God, I am coming from true character.

Always remember: it is not possible to grow into the "living spiritual value" contained within an intellectual principle typed onto a page; you must "internalize" the principle by converting it into a personal "I am" declaration of the person you desire to become.

Were you "programmed from birth" to beLIEve only your perspective of 

• what is "right and wrong," 
• what is "truth and error," 
• what is "right action and sin," 
• what is "allowable speech and what is not," 

is "absolute?

Looking into the Face of Ignorant Arrogance

It may be accurate to say that there is some degree and level of "affectation" which may be universally found in our everyday interactions with fellow children of God.

• So, what does the "face of ignorant arrogance" look like?

Here is one example from my own experiences in life:

An Early Experience with a Condescending Person

To be sure, I had to rise above and guard against my own condescension. It is both subtle and seditious.

In an early decade of my life-experience, I was introduced to a woman, who was living in a then newly developed riverside suburb of Boise, Idaho. It was one of the first in the community, which had its own elected management and a heated swimming pool.

The Upper Middle Class

These were individually owned homes and property.

Indeed, those who lived there, lived in luxurious comfort. They were the upper middle class families of the Boise River Development on the east side of the city.

My marriage partner of that time period was employed by the City of Boise. Thus, in her position she came into contact with many different individuals, families and children through the community. She became friends with one of families who lived in the River Run Development. This is how we were invited to one of this posh community’s annual parties.

A Fascinating Encounter

Upon arriving at the party, my partner quickly introduced me to several of the Association’s Managers. When my partner strayed from my side to talk with her friend who lived there, one of the senior female managers walked over to me. She politely introduced herself to me, again. Then asked my name and what I did for a living.

Made It Clear I Was Beneath Her…

When I revealed to her that I worked in a professional capacity for a national bank, she immediately began to attack me. She made it clear that I didn’t belong there. To further insult me, she advised that were my partner and I to try to buy property in their development, our attempt to buy a home there would be opposed by the River Development Management Association.

I instantaneously concluded that there was no reason to respond to her. My penetrating gaze–locked into her eyes–told the whole of my understanding of her. Such a condescending attitude will never listen to the reasoning of any other logical and better conclusion. Such condescension is truly the mark of “the ignorant soul to appear wise and the barren soul to appear rich.”

Above the Law…

Those who are infected with condescension ever speak to

the idea of social equality, but never, in reality, practice it in their personal lives. In fact, they practice being “above the laws,” which enslaving law upon law they gleefully impose upon their fellow beings. In addition, they have no concept of inclusion. The lives they live are self-evidently exclusive, but will never admit to this.

I also want to make clear this infection of the mind and soul is not limited to those who are in any particular economic class of culture and society. In observable reality, it is one of the most common infections, if not “THE primary infection” which resulted from the Lucifer Rebellion two hundred and fifty thousand years ago.

In Summary

"Affectation" is but one of an almost endless number of words we use to describe "character deficiencies," which are the absence of "true character."

It ought to be dawning on you, by this time, that all 28

principles of high mortal philosophy represent an aspect of either the "absence of true character" or "true character," or both in a single principle.

This point is the greatest single reason why you owe it to yourself to "memorize" and "internalize" these 28 principles of high mortal philosophy. Then, begin to live them in every day life.

Living them in everyday life is how you eventually "master the belligerent will of the physiological energy-system" of animal origin.

The 15th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book is all about self-direction back to being led by the indwelling divine spirit presence of the Thought Adjuster--the "light of life" indwelling the hue-manimal mind. 

The 15th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book correlates to the individual child of God vibrationally responding to the marshalling impulse of the fourth (4th) Adjutant Mind spirit of Knowledge. The 15th principle is the third (3rd) of the set of principles 13 through 16, which are the generalized requirements to experientially master the fourth (4th) psychic circle of experiential spiritual knowledge, also corresponding to the 4th planetary age and the 4th Mansion Training World educational and socialization equivalency requirements.

Note: Any of the first twelve principles representing the generalized requirements for the mastery of the seventh, six and fifth psychic circles of experiential spiritual intuition, experiential spiritual understanding, and experiential spiritual courage, which were not mastered (after entrance in the 4th psychic circle) will be carried over into the fourth (4th) for further experiential acquirement.

The Great Goal of Hue-man Attainment

• I am the mind of perfect poise.
• I am housed in a body of clean habits, and clear and pure thinking.
• I am stabilized in neural energies.
• I am balanced in chemical function.
• I am ever-momentarily transferring all mortal experiential meanings and values into the unifying whole.
• I am ever-momentarily unifying the physical, mental, and spiritual powers with the "I am that I am" personality. 
• I am ever-momentarily giving you, my indwelling divine partner and Thought Controller, my most honest, sincere, and dedicated cooperation in attaining to "supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter."

1. Self-correction.

99:3.7 The great weakness of all this unrecognized and unconscious type of religious activity is that it is unable to profit from open religious criticism and thereby attain to profitable levels of self-correction. It is a fact that religion does not grow unless it is disciplined by constructive criticism, amplified by philosophy, purified by science, and nourished by loyal fellowship.

2. Self-control.

54:1.6 True liberty is the associate of genuine self-respect; false liberty is the consort of self-admiration. True liberty is the fruit of self-control; false liberty, the assumption of self-assertion. Self-control leads to altruistic service; self-admiration tends towards the exploitation of others for the selfish aggrandizement of such a mistaken individual as is willing to sacrifice righteous attainment for the sake of possessing unjust power over his fellow beings.

3. Self-direction.

36:5.8.  3. The spirit of courage—the fidelity endowment—in personal beings, the basis of character acquirement and the intellectual root of moral stamina and spiritual bravery. When enlightened by facts and inspired by truth, this becomes the secret of the urge of evolutionary ascension by the channels of intelligent and conscientious self-direction.

4. Supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

109:3.2 ...comparatively few will elect to ascend the moral heights beyond the hills of self-mastery and character acquirement to attain the higher levels of emerging spirituality.
