The 12th of the

28 Principles in The Urantia Book

The Great Question Number Three

3. Is hope—the grandeur of trust—desirable? Then human existence must constantly be confronted with insecurities and recurrent uncertainties.

The Great Goal of Hue-manimal Existence

It is to the mind of perfect poise, housed in a body of clean habits, stabilized neural energies, and balanced chemical function—when the physical, mental, and spiritual powers are in triune harmony of development—that a maximum of light and truth can be imparted with a minimum of temporal danger or risk to the real welfare of such a being. By such a balanced growth does man ascend the circles of planetary progression one by one, from the seventh to the first.

The Urantia Book 110:6.4

On the Path to Understanding the "Mastery of Self"

It is accurate to say that "understanding" the 28 principles of "high mortal philosophy" found in
Paper 48, The Morontia Life required the asking of many questions and not a small amount of meditative thinking on them.

Hue-man civilization is going through one of its greatest, if not THE greatest tribulation period it has ever experienced.
  • Will hue-man civilization arise from this period of mind-control tyranny the wiser?
To better understand this current great tribulation, it is vital to arrive at a clear meaning and understanding of the words "secularism" and "ecclesiasticism."

Webster's Dictionary offers two (2) definitions for the word "secularism."

1. indifference to or rejection or exclusion of religion and religious considerations.
2. the belief that religion should not play a role in government, education, or other public parts of society.

The standard dictionary definition of "ecclesiasticism" is...

1.
excessive attachment to ecclesiastical forms and practices.
  • How then, do we put "secularism" and "ecclesiasticism" in perspective?
First, we must arrive at the "true definition" of the word "religion."

111:5.1 The doing of the will of God is nothing more or less than an exhibition of creature willingness to share the inner life with God—with the very God who has made such a creature life of inner meaning-value possible.

The doing of the will of God, in the above passage, is equivalent to our willingness to share our individual inner life experiences with God.

These inner life experiences of inner religion, however, may only be expressed outwardly.
  • How are these inner life experiences of inner religion--inner contact with Father's divine spirit presence--the Thought Adjuster--Father's living will within us expressed outwardly?
We two means by which, through the mind, we express ourselves outwardly:
  1. Through our vocal chords and
  2. through our actions.
What we say and do--how we live our lives in relationship to fellow children of God is a reflection of this inner life.

If the inner life--true religion--is an ever-momentary aligning
of the hue-man will with the will of God (honestly sincere cooperation with the indwelling Thought Adjuster), then will the outer reflection be one of a God-centered life--a genuinely caring life of unselfish service to fellow children of our Paradise Father.

But if this inner life is...godless...(the belligerent assertion of the hue-man will), then it expresses as secularistic and ecclesiastical; it is autocratic--holding absolute power over fellow children of God. Godlessness serves only itself, nothing more, and no one else.

This godlessness manifesting as "secularism" and "ecclesiasticism" is the fear-source expressing as every word we may use to denote and name a "character deficiency." And every "character deficiency," without exception, is...separation from Paradise Father's indwelling divine presence.

Character deficiencies, when they remain un-corrected, un-disciplined--un-controlled, creating separation from Paradise Father's indwelling divine spirit presence, are the cancer which spreads inwardly and outwardly, both through the individual child of God, as well as through the collective whole of hue-mans on Urantia.

195:8.13 The complete secularization of science, education, industry, and society can lead only to disaster. During the first third of the twentieth century Urantians killed more human beings than were killed during the whole of the Christian dispensation up to that time. And this is only the beginning of the dire harvest of materialism and secularism; still more terrible destruction is yet to come.

And if you are one of those individuals who interpret this passage as "having already happened," and "doesn't apply to the present," you are still living in self-delusion.

This is an accurate, clear, and precise explanation of the great tribulation we are experiencing at this present time.

With this accurate, clear, and precise meaning, let us now look at the 12th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book.

48:7.14 12. The greatest affliction of the cosmos is never to have been afflicted. Mortals only learn wisdom by experiencing tribulation.

Turning this Principle into a Personal "I am" Declaration

I will ever extract the "pearls of wisdom" from the tribulation I experience; I choose to see affliction as a blessing.
Always remember: it is not possible to grow into the "living spiritual value" contained within an intellectual principle typed onto a page; you must "internalize" the principle by converting it into a personal "I am" declaration of the person you desire to become.

Breaking this Principle Down into Component Parts

When we break this principle down, we see the following parts:

  1. greatest affliction,
  2. never afflicted,
  3. only learn wisdom, and
  4. by experiencing tribulation.

The Greatest Affliction

  • Have you experienced affliction?
  • How do you define affliction in your own experience?
Affliction is defined as "1. a cause of persistent pain or distress," 2. "great suffering," and 3. "the state of being afflicted by something that causes suffering."

The fear of making mistakes, because of the possibility (more than the actuality) of personal and public humiliation can result in a state of anxiety which prohibits ever taking action which would bring change within for the better.

"Change is the essence of life. Be willing to surrender what you are for what you could become."

Every principle we have explored and studied, thus far, is all about embracing our own individual, physical, mental and spiritual evolution.

Learn to adapt. Things inevitably change, circumstances change. Adjust yourself and your efforts to what is presented to you, so you can respond accordingly.

Never see change as a threat, because it can be an opportunity to learn, to grow, evolve and become a better person.

All of these twenty-eight principles, we are beginning to
understand, already, are about the "caterpillar and its internal imaginal cells evolving into the butterfly." We are studying a spiritual blueprint for evolving from hue-manimal to angelic morontial soul into first state spirit child of our Paradise Father.

These very 28 principles are what allow you to live a life consistent with the values portrayed by their elevating wording. And the values portrayed in these 28 principles connect your values to your actions.

The 12th principle is about self-mastery. And it takes experiential spiritual courage to self-correct, self-discipline and exercise self-control, and ever-momentarily self-direct back to alignment with Father's will, by giving our most honestly sincere cooperation to the spirit-leading of the indwelling divine spirit--the Thought Adjuster.

The 12th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book correlates to the individual child of God vibrationally responding to the marshalling impulse of the third (3rd) Adjutant Mind spirit of Courage. The 12th principle is the fourth (4th) of the set of principles 9 through 12, which are the generalized requirements to experientially master the fifth (5th) psychic circle of experiential spiritual courage, also corresponding to the 3rd planetary age and the 3rd Mansion Training World educational and socialization equivalency requirements.

Note: Any of the first twelve principles representing the generalized requirements for the mastery of the seventh, six and fifth psychic circles of experiential spiritual intuition, experiential spiritual understanding, and experiential spiritual courage, which were not mastered (after entrance in the 5th psychic circle) will be carried over into the sixth for further experiential acquirement.

The Great Goal of Hue-man Attainment

  • I am the mind of perfect poise.
  • I am housed in a body of clean habits, and clear and pure thinking.
  • I am stabilized in neural energies.
  • I am balanced in chemical function.
  • I am ever-momentarily transferring all mortal experiential meanings and values into the unifying whole.
  • I am ever-momentarily unifying the physical, mental, and spiritual powers with the "I am that I am" personality.
  • I am ever-momentarily giving you, my indwelling divine partner and Thought Controller, my most honest, sincere, and dedicated cooperation in attaining to "supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter."

  • What are the four cosmic dimensions of personality unification?
1. Body                            1. self-correction
2. Mind                           2. self-discipline / self-control
3. Soul                             3. self-direction to spirit-leading,
4. Spirit                           4. self-mastery

Personality unity self-realizes supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

What is your definition of religion?
How do you define 'your religion?'
How do you keep your religion...pure...?

Personal religion must be kept uncontaminated by:

1. maintaining a self-corrective philosophy of daily living.
2. maintaining non-involvement and impartiality with regard to all social, economic, and political alliances.
3. seeking out and maintaining creative, comforting, and love-expanding relations with one's fellow beings.
4. enhancing personal progress of spiritual insight and the appreciation of cosmic values.
5. prevention of fanaticism by the compensations of the scientific mental attitude.

What is a character deficiency?
What is self-correction of a character-deficiency?
What are the steps involved in correcting one's own character-deficiencies?
What replaces a character-deficiency?

Does a character-deficiency automatically disappear when one is exercising self-correction, self-control and self-direction?

1. Self-correction.

99:3.7 The great weakness of all this unrecognized and unconscious type of religious activity is that it is unable to profit from open religious criticism and thereby attain to profitable levels of self-correction. It is a fact that religion does not grow unless it is disciplined by constructive criticism, amplified by philosophy, purified by science, and nourished by loyal fellowship.

2. Self-control.

54:1.6 True liberty is the associate of genuine self-respect; false liberty is the consort of self-admiration. True liberty is the fruit of self-control; false liberty, the assumption of self-assertion. Self-control leads to altruistic service; self-admiration tends towards the exploitation of others for the selfish aggrandizement of such a mistaken individual as is willing to sacrifice righteous attainment for the sake of possessing unjust power over his fellow beings.

3. Self-direction.

36:5.8.  3. The spirit of courage—the fidelity endowment—in personal beings, the basis of character acquirement and the intellectual root of moral stamina and spiritual bravery. When enlightened by facts and inspired by truth, this becomes the secret of the urge of evolutionary ascension by the channels of intelligent and conscientious self-direction.

4. Supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

109:3.2 ...comparatively few will elect to ascend the moral heights beyond the hills of self-mastery and character acquirement to attain the higher levels of emerging spirituality.
