The 10th of the

28 Principles in The Urantia Book

The Great Question Number Three

3. Is hope—the grandeur of trust—desirable? Then human existence must constantly be confronted with insecurities and recurrent uncertainties.

The Great Goal of Hue-manimal Existence

It is to the mind of perfect poise, housed in a body of clean habits, stabilized neural energies, and balanced chemical function—when the physical, mental, and spiritual powers are in triune harmony of development—that a maximum of light and truth can be imparted with a minimum of temporal danger or risk to the real welfare of such a being. By such a balanced growth does man ascend the circles of planetary progression one by one, from the seventh to the first.

The Urantia Book 110:6.4

On the Path to Understanding the "Mastery of Self"

It is accurate to say that "understanding" the 28 principles of "high mortal philosophy" found in Paper 48, The Morontia Life required the asking of many questions and not a small amount of meditative thinking on them.

The Right-Use of Personal Power vs. Abuse of Power

  • Has the word "righteousness" been more than less "bastardized" in meaning?
First, consider the traditional "Christian" meaning of the word "righteous"...
What does righteousness mean in the Bible?

Righteousness is the state of moral perfection required by God to enter heaven. However, the Bible clearly states that human beings cannot achieve righteousness through their own efforts: "Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin."

Reference
If you further consider the standardized dictionary meaning of the word "righteous"...
Definition of righteous

1: acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt or sin
2a: morally right or justifiable
a righteous decision
b: arising from an outraged sense of justice or morality
righteous indignation.

These definitions get us closer to a clear and unequivocal meaning as it is used in the 10th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book.

Next, let us juxtapose (contrast) synonyms and antonyms.

Synonyms & Antonyms for righteous

Synonyms

all right, decent, ethical, good, honest, honorable, just, moral, nice, right, right-minded, straight, true, upright, virtuous

Antonyms

bad, black, dishonest, dishonorable, evil, evil-minded, immoral, indecent, sinful, unethical, unrighteous, wicked, wrong.

And the clear and unequivocal meaning in principle number six gives us a clear and unequivocal meaning of the word "righteous," as signifying the "right-use of personal power."

With this clear and unequivocal meaning in mind, let us now proceed to understanding the deeper and deepest meaning in principle number ten (10).

Principle number ten states:

48:7.12 10. Righteousness strikes the harmony chords of truth, and the melody vibrates throughout the cosmos, even to the recognition of the Infinite.

Turning this Principle into a Personal "I am" Declaration

I am striking the harmonic chords of truth, by my right-use of personal power; thus, I become the cosmic melody which reverberates throughout the cosmos, even to the recognition of my Paradise Parents."
Always remember: it is not possible to grow into the "living spiritual value" contained within an intellectual principle typed onto a page; you must "internalize" the principle by converting it into a personal "I am" declaration of the person you desire to become.

Now, if we substitute our clear and unequivocal meaning in place of "righteousness," this principle reads...

Right-use of personal power strikes harmonious chords of truth-response, and the melodic vibration reverberates throughout the cosmos, even to the recognition of the Infinite Spirit-Mind, the Eternal Son, and the Paradise Father.

Breaking Down this Principle into Its Component Parts

  • right-use of personal power,
  • harmonious chords of truth-response,
  • melodic vibration reverberates throughout the cosmos,
  • recognized by the Paradise Deities.
What Does the Right-Use of Personal Power Mean?
5:5.1 Morality has its origin in the reason of self-consciousness; it is superanimal but wholly evolutionary. Human evolution embraces in its unfolding all endowments antecedent to the bestowal of the Adjusters and to the pouring out of the Spirit of Truth. But the attainment of levels of morality does not deliver man from the real struggles of mortal living. Man's physical environment
  • entails the battle for existence;
  • the social surroundings necessitate ethical adjustments;
  • the moral situations require the making of choices in the highest realms of reason;
  • the spiritual experience (having realized God) demands that man find him and sincerely strive to be like him.
1. Within the context of this passage we may clearly understand that at the level of the "battle for existence"...
  • "specialized skills and cleverness" are prerequisite for survival and are typically substituted for "true character. This is the level of the display of "character deficiencies," which must be corrected.
2. "The social surroundings necessitating ethical adjustments" require an increasing level of self-discipline and self-control.

3. "Moral situations requiring the making of choices in the highest realms of reason" means ever-momentarily self-directing back to being spirit-led (the choosing of the highest good).

4. "The spiritual experience of (having realized God) demands that man find him and sincerely strive to be like him" requires the mastery of self leading to "the supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter."

Harmonious Chords of Truth-Response

It is this very experience of misusing personal power, but ever
choosing to correct the "character deficiencies" which grow out of the abuse of one's personal power (from the slightest controlling attitudes to the most wicked abuses), wherein the "harmonious chords of truth-response" strike a melodic resonance.

Truth-Resonance -- The Most Powerful Cosmic Reverberation

Choosing to using personal power only for truth, beauty, and goodness in the service of one's fellow children of God IS the "melodic vibration which reverberates throughout the cosmos, the most powerful of all vibrations in the experience of evolving from hue-manimal to angelic morontial soul into first stage spirit son of our Paradise Father.

And finally, let us return, again, to principle number six (6)...

48:7.8 6. To enjoy privilege without abuse, to have liberty without license, to possess power and steadfastly refuse to use it for self-aggrandizement—these are the marks of high civilization.
Such a mark of individual high civilization is the badge of cosmic nobility--self-correction, self-discipline and self-control--self-restraint of the tendency to usurp and control the free will priceless powers of individual choice-decision of fellow mortal children, women, and men -- the children of God.

Hue-man civilization, is nowhere near the mark of high civilization.
This is still a barbaric civilization passing slowly but surely out of the barbarism of a million years of hue-man evolution, in which the tragic infection of the Lucifer Rebellion, and the subsequent spiritual quarantining of Urantia will in a thousand years from now, looking back, will be counted among the numerous and endless spiritual blessing bestowed upon lowly Urantians.

But always remember: there is no law, except the one you choose to impose upon yourself, which prevents you from attaining to this mark of high civilization and badge of cosmic nobility; the door is wide open, but you must choose to walk through it.

The 10th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book is about "self-discipline and self-control", the personality-choosing to embrace spiritual liberty (self-restraint= self-discipline and self-control) over the unbridled fear-intellectual fraud practiced upon one's own evolving morontial soul and upon the evolving souls of fellow children of God."

Pray for More Self-Mastery

Remember, even if prayer does not change God, it very often effects great and lasting changes in the one who prays in faith and confident expectation. Prayer has been the ancestor of much peace of mind, cheerfulness, calmness, courage, self-mastery, and fair-mindedness in the men and women of the evolving races. ~ The Urantia Book, (91:4.5)

Trust is the crucial test of will creatures. Trustworthiness is the true measure of self-mastery, character. ~ The Urantia Book, (28:6.13)

Circle Attainment and Self-Mastery

In the ministry to so-called normal beings, seraphic assignments are made in accordance with the human attainment of the circles of intellectuality and spirituality. You start out in your mind of mortal investment in the seventh circle and journey inward in the task of self-understanding, self-conquest, and self-mastery; and circle by circle you advance until (if natural death does not terminate your career and transfer your struggles to the mansion worlds) you reach the first or inner circle of relative contact and communion with the indwelling Adjuster. ~ The Urantia Book, (113:1.6)

The 10th of the 28 principles in The Urantia Book correlates to the individual child of God vibrationally responding to the marshalling impulse of the second (3rd) Adjutant Mind spirit of Courage. The 10th principle is the second of the set of principles 9 through 12, which are the generalized requirements to experientially master the fifth (5th) psychic circle of experiential spiritual courage, also corresponding to the 3rd planetary age and the 3rd Mansion Training World educational and socialization equivalency requirements.

Note: Any of the first ten principles representing the generalized requirements for the mastery of the seventh and sixth psychic circles of experiential spiritual intuition and experiential spiritual understanding, which were not mastered (after entrance in the 5th psychic circle) are carried over into the fifth for further experiential acquirement.

The Great Goal of Hue-man Attainment

  • I am the mind of perfect poise.
  • I am housed in a body of clean habits, and clear and pure thinking.
  • I am stabilized in neural energies.
  • I am balanced in chemical function.
  • I am ever-momentarily transferring all mortal experiential meanings and values into the unifying whole.
  • I am ever-momentarily unifying the physical, mental, and spiritual powers with the "I am that I am" personality.
  • I am ever-momentarily giving you, my indwelling divine partner and Thought Controller, my most honest, sincere, and dedicated cooperation in attaining to "supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter."

  • What are the four cosmic dimensions of personality unification?
1. Body                            1. self-correction
2. Mind                           2. self-discipline / self-control
3. Soul                             3. self-direction to spirit-leading,
4. Spirit                           4. self-mastery

Personality unity self-realizes supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

What is your definition of religion?
How do you define 'your religion?'
How do you keep your religion...pure...?

Personal religion must be kept uncontaminated by:

1. maintaining a self-corrective philosophy of daily living.
2. maintaining non-involvement and impartiality with regard to all social, economic, and political alliances.
3. seeking out and maintaining creative, comforting, and love-expanding relations with one's fellow beings.
4. enhancing personal progress of spiritual insight and the appreciation of cosmic values.
5. prevention of fanaticism by the compensations of the scientific mental attitude.

What is a character deficiency?
What is self-correction of a character-deficiency?
What are the steps involved in correcting one's own character-deficiencies?
What replaces a character-deficiency?

Does a character-deficiency automatically disappear when one is exercising self-correction, self-control and self-direction?

1. Self-correction.

99:3.7 The great weakness of all this unrecognized and unconscious type of religious activity is that it is unable to profit from open religious criticism and thereby attain to profitable levels of self-correction. It is a fact that religion does not grow unless it is disciplined by constructive criticism, amplified by philosophy, purified by science, and nourished by loyal fellowship.

2. Self-control.

54:1.6 True liberty is the associate of genuine self-respect; false liberty is the consort of self-admiration. True liberty is the fruit of self-control; false liberty, the assumption of self-assertion. Self-control leads to altruistic service; self-admiration tends towards the exploitation of others for the selfish aggrandizement of such a mistaken individual as is willing to sacrifice righteous attainment for the sake of possessing unjust power over his fellow beings.

3. Self-direction.

36:5.8.  3. The spirit of courage—the fidelity endowment—in personal beings, the basis of character acquirement and the intellectual root of moral stamina and spiritual bravery. When enlightened by facts and inspired by truth, this becomes the secret of the urge of evolutionary ascension by the channels of intelligent and conscientious self-direction.

4. Supremacy of spirit domination over mind and matter.

109:3.2 ...comparatively few will elect to ascend the moral heights beyond the hills of self-mastery and character acquirement to attain the higher levels of emerging spirituality.
